So what does it mean to me to bear my cross and follow Jesus? It means that I have to give up what I want out of this life. I need to understand that all the things I like to do in the body eat, drink, watch movies, sleep, rest, relax, read, listen to music, tell jokes, etc. need to be replaced with teaching God’s word, feeding others, providing drinks for others, showing movies about God and His kingdom, giving rest to others through my work, helping others relax through my toiling, reading the Bible to others, and making music to God. Should my mother try to stand against God’s will I should not heed her. Should my wife and or children keep me from doing God’s will I should walk away from them. These are hard things to say because these are the things that make up our lives. And hence these are the things we should give up to gain a life in Christ. We are so conditioned from birth in this country to work hard to get ahead. We are taught to climb the corporate ladder. We are told that we should amass wealth for a retirement. We are told “it’s a dog eat dog world and you have to be willing to beat out your neighbor to win the prize.” But, these are all human traditions of success in this fleshly life. For the longest time I bought the lie. The closer I get to God and Jesus the less I want and the more I want to give. I have never been wealthy or famous. But, I have had a lot of material possessions, a lot of success in my career. I have seen more than a million dollars pass through my hands over my lifetime and I count it all as worthless because I was not doing God’s will. I was trying to be “the man”. I was trying to impress my friends with “my stuff”. I wanted to have the coolest house, the best cars, a boat, a yacht, a helicopter. Oh yes if I had a helicopter everyone would surely be impressed! I see now it is all dross. Those things that I wanted were the very things that were driving me to hate. They were driving me to be greedy, making me desire more money and praise from my friends. As I work to get rid of all these things I am feeling more and more freedom from them. At one time we had a house fire and lost everything. I was amazed how good it felt to not own anything anymore. It was like a thousand pounds had been lifted from my shoulders. I still don’t understand it all but I am working toward killing my flesh and its desires so that I can share in my Lord and Saviors grace in the proper way. Like my brother always told me , “20 miles in, 20 miles out”. This could take some time… Love and peace to you all…

Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, "This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish." 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you "

Rom 6:11

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
